So the New Year is upon us. The question becomes, what are your goals? What will you try to achieve this year? Will this be the year you start a business, lose weight, or quit smoking? Will this be the year you write a book, beat addiction, or quit your job? Will this be the year you resolve family problems, buy a home, or establish a charity? For most of us, we answer affirmative to all questions. But why do we do this? We do this because we rationalize that accomplishing all goals is possible (our first mistake) and by doing so it will result in our best year yet. Now, while this practice is admirable, it is clearly not realistic. The reason this is true is that to achieve any meaningful (read: challenging) goal, it often requires great effort. Consequently, achieving one goal is difficult, let alone achieving the entire bunch. So…here is my advice to you. Be realistic for a change. Face reality head on and acknowledge that you will likely only be able to complete one goal instead of two or three. I, myself, have made this mistake in the past thinking I could effect great change in my life (that is, achieve multiple inner soul goals at the same time) when in fact, due to dispersed energy, I failed to achieve any goal. Therefore, to ward against not achieving any goal, focus your efforts on achieving only one goal. Two of my favorite thinkers, Einstein and Newton, both acknowledged that it was intense personal “focus” (i.e., “concentrated attention”) that allowed each of them to achieve their goals; to succeed in life. They did not attempt to achieve multiple goals at one time because they knew the effort would be futile. Thus, I ask, how will it be that you will be able to achieve multiple inner soul goals when some of the strongest known intellects to have walked the earth had difficulty doing so? The short answer is, not very.
2012 can be your best year yet simply by a) focusing your efforts, b) channeling your resources, and c) rallying your energies around a single (common) goal. Do what other great achievers have done; acknowledge what other great achievers have acknowledged – when we focus our efforts, success will follow.
Wishing you the best in 2012…Cheers!
Look forward to your reply.
