New Year’s Resolutions: Necessary But Not Sufficient

by Randall Rogers on January 15, 2012

It is interesting that a change in calendar year can seemingly motivate, inspire the masses to enact personal transformation. This is admirable, funny, but admirable. Before I appear to flip on the matter, I must confess that I, too, have relied on the coming of a “new year” to inspire changes in my life. The trouble is, as most people come to realize is that to verbalize a goal represents only step one. Moreover, to verbalize a goal is the easy part. What most people do not do is take step two which is to draft a personal strategy to achieve such goal. Why does this step rarely take place? This is largely the result of people not knowing how to define strategy; that is, they lack knowledge of a framework that can take them from “goal asserted” to “goal achieved”. What this all suggests is that while ‘resolutions’ are NECESSARY (to transform one’s life) they are not SUFFICIENT. We need more than declarations that I will lose 40 lbs, or start a business, or earn a degree, or beat addiction. We need more than the typical mental gaming that most of us engage in to make ourselves feel better.

To achieve ANY goal you may set for youself only requires five steps, as outlined below:

Step 1 – Establish your goal (e.g., lose 40 lbs by June 1st, 2012)
Step 2 – Draft a personal strategy to achieve such goal (Purchase a copy of: Breaking Free: The Ultimate Guide to Living Your Passion)
Step 3 – Execute your personal strategy (that is, get to work)
Step 4 – Reflect on your progress daily
Step 5 – Course correct your personal strategy if it is not working

REPEAT Steps 3-5

Achieving great things in life requires great effort. There are no shortcuts. Do what other great achievers before you have done – develop a personal strategy and then get to work. 2012 can be your ‘Best Year Yet’ if you want it to be. All now rests with you.

Look forward to your reply.
