“To be a rock, and not to roll” and so goes the famous lyrics from the smash 70’s rock hit ‘Stairway to Heaven’. Recently, I was driving and this song came on the radio and as I listened to the lyrics I was struck by the phrase stated above. You see, in my youth, I must have listened to this song dozens of times, but never paid much attention to the lyrics. Today, I look through a different lens of life and things that went unnoticed long ago, today stop me in my tracks.
Today, I experience life with new view of life; new sensibilities; deeper sensitivities. Ever since I re-connected with soul years ago, I have become sensitized to see differently, hear differently, think differently, and act differently. This was the case when I heard the song stated above on the radio. Specifically, I locked on to the lyrics “to be a rock, and not to roll”. The reason I locked onto this lyric is because of what it suggests. Such lyrics suggest something existing not as what it really is, but existing instead in an imposter form. To be a rock, and not to roll (when considering one-self) reflects a denial of innate design; it reflects a denial to live authentically as who one really is and was meant to be. As I thought about these lyrics, I thought about how sad it is that so many millions of people around the globe represent such ‘rock’. That is, so many millions of people do not live authentically but instead operate as imposter self; exist as some other being entirely. For discussion sake, let me define what it means to live authentically. It means, for starters, that one is working in a profession/role that caters to/reflects one’s passion. Further, it means that one is living with the right life partner and that one is living in the right location. Accordingly, to not be living one’s passion, to not be with the right life partner, and to not be living in a location of inspiration ALL suggest living as imposter self.
Collectively, humanity represents the ‘rock’ that fails to ‘roll’. Individually, few among us are living authentically; are true to innate design. This must change! Each of us must make it our highest personal priority to operate as who we really are and were meant to be. Now, while not all rocks are meant to roll, the analogy works as all of nature exists, operates authentically on the surface of life. The same cannot be said of our species; the human race.
Therefore, the call to action is this: make a resolve today to move towards innate design. That is, take immediate, determined action to begin living authentically today, and every day. For when this happens, when your head, heart, and hands are aligned around YOUR common purpose, great things will happen. This I can assure you is the truth.
Look forward to your reply.
